The 24-year-old certainly has room to grow and develop, but he has already proven himself during his two and a half seasons at the club.
In Chris Wilder’s unique system, O’Connell has been integral to the team’s success by providing overlapping runs on the left-hand side despite playing as a centre-half.
Fans will be hoping that the defender is fit for the Sheffield derby on Monday night. He has missed the last three league games with a hamstring injury.
Wilder has suggested the player is back fit, but he will make a late call on whether to include him against Wednesday.
