Teammate Backs Blades Keeper Henderson For England Call Up

Dean Henderson’s understudy has backed the goalkeeper to be named in the England squad for the Euro 2020 qualifiers next month. Simon Moore believes the Manchester United loanee has what it takes to play for Gareth Southgate’s side:

“As a goalkeeper, you want to be playing week in, week out, but I’ve got a young English goalkeeper, who’s on the verge of a senior call-up, in front of me, so my job’s a little bit difficult.”

“Deano’s a fantastic goalkeeper, who’s only going to get better and better and I’ve just got to make sure I push him day in, day out.”

The 22-year-old will certainly be in contention for the games against Bulgaria and Kosovo at the beginning of September with places up for grabs in the senior squad.

Southgate has generally looked to pick players who have come through the system, and with Henderson having played internationals at various youth levels, he will be in the frame to be picked.

He has eleven caps at Under 21 level, and will certainly have a chance of being selected as England’s third-choice goalkeeper. Jordan Pickford is the current number one while the experience of Aston Villa goalkeeper Tom Heaton may also give him the nod.

However, Jack Butland, who was in the UEFA Nations League squad earlier this summer, has had a difficult start to the campaign with Stoke, and there is certainly an opening there for Henderson to be named.

Sheffield United’s number one has started the season well having conceded three goals and kept one clean sheet in three games so far in the Premier League.
