Sheffield United Have Fourth Rival In Race To Sign Argentine Playmaker On A Free Transfer

Chicago Fire attacking midfielder Nico Gaitan has started talks with Boca Juniors over a possible move back to Argentina, according to Todofichajes.com.

Earlier this week it was claimed that Sheffield United, West Ham and Aston Villa had all held discussions with the player’s agent Matias Lipman over a switch to the Premier League.

However, Boca’s involvement means there are possibly four teams vying for Gaitan’s signature. The Argentinian international is available on a free transfer after opting against signing a one-year contraction extension in Chicago.

The 31-year-old only moved to MLS from Chinese Super League club Dalian Yifang in March, but he scored four goals and provided 11 assists in 27 appearances during his first season in the United States.

Gaitan has 19 caps for Argentina, and generally plays as a number 10 after switching from playing as a winger earlier in his career. Even so, it would be hard to see where he would fit into Chris Wilder’s 3-5-2 system.
