Napoli are lining up a formal proposal to sign Sheffield United midfielder Sander Berge, according to reports in the Italian media.

The Serie A side are said to be readying an offer for the Norwegian international that involves an initial loan, with an obligation to buy at the end of next season.

With the Blades holding out for Berge’s £35m release clause, it is highly unlikely that Napoli’s bid will be accepted by the Yorkshire club, but it could force other potential suitors to firm up their interest.

Arsenal, Tottenham and Aston Villa have all been mentioned as potential destinations over the past few months, but United’s price tag has been a major stumbling block.

The Blades are thought to be prepared to compromise on the payment structure, with less being paid upfront, but they are not willing to be shortchanged on a player they signed for £22.5m just eighteen months ago.
