Neville Questions Whether Sheffield United Star Will Cut It At Old Trafford

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has raised doubts over whether Dean Henderson is ready to become the Red Devils’ number one goalkeeper ahead of David De Gea.

The 23-year-old has been outstanding since joining Sheffield United on loan two years ago but Neville feels the pressure of playing at Old Trafford is very different to playing for the Blades:

“With respect to Sheffield United, it’s very different making a mistake for Manchester United than it is for Sheffield United.”

“My point is to make that decision, which is a huge call to say that Dean Henderson comes back to Old Trafford and he’s the No 1, you’re essentially dismissing David de Gea and what he’s done for the club over the last seven or eight years. I would just urge caution on that at this moment in time.”

Of course, the only way you can find out whether Henderson has what it takes is by playing him and seeing whether he can cope, but Chris Wilder would gladly snap up the player on a permanent basis if Neville’s doubts are shared by manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Henderson has made one mistake this season, conceding from a weak shot from Georginio Wijnaldum in the 1-0 defeat to Liverpool back in September. However, he recovered instantly from the error, and it is testament to his character that despite some choice words from Wilder after the game, he reacted positively and responded with some strong displays.
