Blades sign Henderson from Manchester United

Sheffield United have completed the signing of Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson on a season long loan.

The 21-year-old England Under-21 international spent last season on loan at Shrewsbury Town, where he made 48 first-team appearances last season, keeping 19 clean sheets and earning a place in the PFA’s League One team of the season.

It is an exciting deal for the Blades, who were known to be in the market for a goalkeeper this summer.

Speaking after the announcement was made, Chris Wilder expressed his delight about signing the young stopper.

“This is a big one for us,” said Wilder.

“Dean was certainly a target for rival clubs in our division.

“Dean is a confident boy, who has proved himself wherever he has been. He had a fantastic season for Shrewsbury, playing a starring role in what they achieved last year.”

Henderson signed a new two-year deal at Old Trafford just last week, and revealed that he had spoken to former United team mate Joe Riley, who had also spent time at Bramall lane on loan, before agreeing to join the club.

“I spoke to Joe Riley last night about the manager,” Henderson said. “He spoke really highly of him and, speaking to Chris Wilder, he has come across as really delighted to have me. It was a no-brainer and it gives me the platform to go there, play games and, hopefully, be a key part of the success there next season.

“I like the fact he’s a Sheffield lad and a Sheffield United fan. He is really passionate about where he wants the club to go and he wants hungry, ambitious young players to help him do that. It’s good as I’m an ambitious lad and, hopefully, we’ll hit it off well.”
