Sheffield United are among the four teams pursuing Blackburn Rovers’ Joe Rothwell but they are not the favourites to sign the midfielder, according to journalist Michael Walker.

The reporter, who works for The Athletic and the Irish Times, claims that Bournemouth are leading the Blades, Nottingham Forest and West Brom in the race for the former Manchester United academy graduate:

Rothwell has been a key player for Rovers this season, helping their push for a playoff place. However, after the Lancashire club missed out on a top-six spot, he is now expected to leave when his contract expires next month.

It is not a surprise that the 27-year-old is in such high demand. He has scored three goals and contributed 10 assists in 41 Championship appearances.

Rothwell was linked with Rangers a few months back, but it now seems he will be remaining in England. Whether Sheffield United can muscle their way to the front of the queue for the playmaker’s signature may hinge on them securing promotion through the playoffs.
