Adam Confirms Blades Did Pursue Deal For Championship Star With 8 Goals And 6 Assists This Season

Sheffield United “were interested” in snapping up Reading playmaker John Swift, according to Charlie Adam.

The veteran midfielder was a Royals player between July 2019 and September 2020 and he confirmed that the Blades were keen on signing the former England Under 21 international:

“Sheffield United were interested in him when they were in the Premier League when I was at Reading. It’s going to be difficult (to keep him at Reading). The longer his contract runs down, the club will have to look at (selling him). He’s a talented player.”

It really is a case of “what might have been” for United. Swift has been in fantastic form for Reading this campaign, having bagged eight goals and provided six assists in only 11 appearances.

Blades boss Slavisa Jokanovic would undoubtedly have loved to have someone like Swift in his squad that can score and create chances for others at this level.

While Sheffield United haven’t exactly been goal-shy so far this season, having hit the back of the net 20 times in 14 matches, Swift’s quality would certainly have made a difference in some tight games.

The Blades have been on the end of narrow defeats to Birmingham, Huddersfield, Bournemouth and Milwall since August and you can’t help but think what Swift could have produced something in those matches.
