Sheffield United captain Billy Sharp reached a significant milestone when he scored in the 3-0 win over Wigan yesterday.
The Blades striker broke Rickie Lambert’s record for the most goals scored by a single player in English football during the 21st century.
Sharp’s 54th-minute strike against the Latics was his 220th in English league football, and the 32-year-old said he was happy to score the landmark goal:
“I’m glad the goal came today because I didn’t want it to keep going on. I just want to keep scoring goals now and hopefully help the club get promoted.”
Fans on Twitter were delighted for the forward:

Sharp now has 16 goals in the Championship this campaign, level with Aston Villa’s Tammy Abraham at the top of the scoring charts. Despite coming towards the end of his career, the former Scunthorpe and Doncaster player is showing no signs of slowing down. He has already surpassed the 13 he managed throughout the whole of last season.
The striker will be hoping his goals fire Sheffield United to promotion with the Blades now just two points off the automatic promotion places.
